Jun/Jul 2020 Letter from the President - Make a Difference

My favorite Forest Gump quote: “Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates… You never know which one you are going to get.” It sums up what being HOA Board member is all about because every day can bring something random that you don’t expect. If you operate with good intention nevertheless, you can make a difference. Please be the change that you want to see in Rogers Ranch. If you see something that you would like to change, say something and let’s see if we can organize a committee to help you get it done.

Random thought: If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If a policeman has his knee on the neck of a man and you say that you are neutral, the man's family will not appreciate your neutrality when he dies. It is easy to let things go because it doesn’t involve you. Like Coach Popovich said, sometimes everyone knows there is a stop sign that needs to go up before someone gets hurt in your neighborhood. Why is it always after a kid gets killed that they finally go up?

Random concern: Speeding is always a serious concern for RR Homeowner’s and accidents can occur by not obeying the speed limit. We’ve got visible speed limit signs but we may need a few stop signs. Most people including me just say no to speed bumps. Speeding Fines can only be sent to homeowners and not visitors because we are not the HOA police. There are a few Speed Detection Technology options to consider, some monitor speed while others capture images of the vehicles that are speeding. I’d like to form a committee to build a plan to holistically address this issue… Who’s interested?

Random criticism:  “My expectations are for the board members to act in the best interest of the Cross Timber community without personal bias and to be respectful of their fellow board members!  Issues involving the community should have resolution and a point of contact (POC), ASAP, examples:  paving of the roads in the subdivision, continuous gate issues, camera concerns, and the list continues!  We need to set clear expectations,  assign and accept responsibility for closure on these items!”

Frankly, I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment because I believe that Active homeowner engagement and ethical board member behavior is crucial to modernizing our now 21 year old by-laws and DCCRs. This is the reason that the ethics committee was formed on April 5, 2020 as an independent group of peer resident owners none of whom currently sit on the HOA Board of Directors by design. They strive to only act on the side of (and what's best for) 'the neighborhood and the community' so they will not be taking sides in favor of or against any one person, one particular property or one point of view.

In closing, There is a feather that comes in at the beginning and the end of Forest Gump. "Our destiny is only defined by how we deal with the chance elements to our life and that's kind of the embodiment of the feather as it comes in. Here is this thing that can land anywhere and that it lands at your feet. It has theological implications that are really huge.” – Tom Hanks

There are several board seats opening up (including mine) for the annual HOA meeting in August. Why not run for one of them or join a committee? If you have been thinking about it, here’s your chance.
